My Chemical Romance: Ways to Improve Mental Wellness

Taking place in a span of 3 months from August to October, My Chemical Romance (MCR)

—whose initials also stand for Mindfulness, Coping, and Resilience—is an event organized by NUS SNASC's Advocacy Committee that advocates for mental wellness among student nurses. It was conducted across 3 sessions, each focusing on a different aspect of mental wellness, with the aim of equipping participants with skills that will follow them on their undergraduate journey.

MCR #1: Mindfulness

The very first session in August gave us much insight on the importance of mindfulness in regaining focus amidst our busy lives. Facilitated by our very own Dr Piyanee Yobas, participants found themselves engaged in activities such as mindful eating (a personal favourite!), mindful breathing, and mindful art and craft as we made our own phone holder from scratch. It was a fun-filled session full of hands-on activities that involved all five of our senses: smell, touch, taste, hearing, and sight!

MCR #2: Coping

Coping is an essential skill in life that ensures that we keep our mental and emotional well-being in check. The second iteration of MCR started off with a yoga session led by one of our very own SNASC members, Laura Heng, where participants were taught how to use yoga to calm their bodies and minds. Other tips on coping were also shared, including as deep breathing exercises for effective relaxation, and bullet journaling to help us organise our thoughts better. In addition to that, participants also shared personal strategies on how to cope with stress. It was an enriching session of learning various coping strategies and discovering what worked best for each of us.

MCR #3: Resilience

The third section of MCR was held on 10 October 2019 in conjunction with World Mental Health Day. It was all fun and games as participants engaged in a round of activities designed to test their resilience, and the session ended with participants sharing their own stories of resilience.

Mental health remains crucial, no matter who you are or where you're from. We hope that all participants have learned something about themselves and their own mental wellness!

In line with the theme of suicide prevention in World Mental Health Day 2019, we urge everyone to look out for themselves and their friends. If you feel unwell, please do not hesitate to seek help.
